Trending: Seeing Double

So I've been seeing these faces on plates as artwork a lot lately (see this issue of Lonny) - and am wondering: is this a new trend? Or have they been around for a long time without me noticing?

I only had to google "faces on plates" - gotta love Google (and Wikipedia) - to find out that they are by Piero Fornasetti, an Italian painter, sculptor and interior decorator. The face painted on almost all plates is of opera singer Lina Cavalieri. Why he started painting over 500 versions of her face? His answer is simply: "I don't know. I started making the plates and never stopped". I don't know about you, but I'm sold. And knowing the history behind these plates make me want them even more. If anyone is cashed up and inclined, the plates are $230 each at Unica Home.

  2. I know - love it too - and it's contagious! I can't believe people would literally cover their walls in original Fornasetti plates at $230/each! The wallpaper is definitely the cheaper option..
