The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Rue Issue Six

Is it just me or has the Rue hype passed? Don't get me wrong, I think the girls behind Rue are really lovely and I am in awe of how much they've achieved in the last year. But after six issues, we are still left with the same discombobulated (yes, it's my fancy word of the day, look it up!) magazine, that tends jumps from one bit to the next...

Are they a shelter mag? Or is it about fashion; food; travel; or is it just a pub to show off their friends and contributors? (By the way, hats off to shortening that last section and shifting it to the back of the mag!)

On the one hand, I have no doubt that Rue will continue to deliver bi-monthly loveliness like this:

And this:

And this:

But I continue to be slightly confused by things like these:

Or these:

And I am disappointed by the fact that I still find images like these:

Surely they know that this is basically a close-up of an Ikea frame... Grand designs? I think not...

Lack of styling and object-editing, especially on the left hand counter... Is that a collection of chickens?

 Feels very showroomy... Yawn.

The image is blurry and has light spots...

So I would love to know, am I the only one? What did you think of this month's issue? Did you love it or loathe it? I enjoyed it, no more no less...

Maybe I have high expectations. I know just as well as anyone how hard it is to create a style and a voice for something as simple as a blog, let alone tackling an online mag with no print experience! But I am still eagerly awaiting for Rue to find its voice.

And I will not give up. I still kind of like the damn mag...

  1. i really loved some of the travel shots. i don't mind that ludo's kitchen is cluttered. he's a pro and he's french (the roosters). i was surprised to see so *many* books right in the kitchen, but i really like that side space they have.

the craft layout was pretty ugh.

i check in for this feature. you read mags with such a trained eye. i'm kind of serendipitous, sort of treasure-hunting for something to justify the purchase. so to speak.

  2. Belledame - Thanks for the sweet words. I guess it comes from my training in communication-design mixed with my interior design anal-retentiveness... I am a fussy person.

That being said, many magazines have the same effect on me as they do on you: Lonny, Vogue Living, Belle Magasine...

I just get annoyed when the craft behind the mag is lacking and makes me notice those little details. A magazine in my eyes should be flawless...

  3. oh i agree about flawless presentation. maybe my standards are being whittled away. i sometimes finish a mag and miss that feeling like i just finished a fantastic meal.

  4. MMm yes, that's a good one. I tend to sigh out loud when an image really inspires me so I look out for that as well :)
