TV Recap: The Block Week 2-3

In case you were wondering why I didn't recap The Block last week, it's because IT WAS TERRIBLE. There is only one team that has a decent amount of style, the other ones are all insane! Let me explain...

The most stylish couple of the bunch. They have a sweet vintage thing going on. I wasn't a huge fan of bedroom 2 - that crate bed did not do it for me - but I did enjoy their bathroom.

Did someone say bland? These two are so clueless... Let's just say they would maybe be alright at real estate staging and that's about as far as it goes. PS: Can someone tell me when beige and khaki made a comeback?

I suppose these girls have a hint of style, but there is always something fundamentally wrong with their design.

Case 1: Take a 1m by 2m room, and make it even more stupidly long and narrow by slapping desks and storage on one wall and, to make it even more awkward, slap a giant flat screen TV on the opposite wall.

Case 2: A really awkwardly placed black feature wall and flowers that should have belonged in my grandma's bedroom.

If these guys put another brown shag anywhere, I might throw something sharp and heavy at the TV. They might have renovation experience, but that's it.

The sink was the most unpractical sink I've ever seen. And why is the orchid under the sink??? Surely there is a better spot for it. Otherwise, here's an idea: don't buy an orchid!

So there you have it folks. Can you see this show makes me angry? Please do share, I would love to know what you thought! Who are your favorites? What did you hate?

  1. Hi. I can't watch the show for more than a few minutes - I hate the format. It's as if it's made by someone with bad ADHD - nipping back and forth between all those two second sound bytes drives me demented. I also hate the onus on what's fashionable - that makes me really uneasy, as if all the contestants have to do is figure out the trend recipes and they'll be right. I agree, too, that there's precious little design ability in evidence, but that's almost a secondary thing for me.

  2. The block used to be one of my fav shows...this year it is total rubbish! It doesnt inspire me at all & just pisses me off & the terrible designs, choices of fixtures (sorry but that washplane might look good but it is SO unpractical in a main bathroom!) and the challenges piss me off too! Its on every night yet we are seeing less renovating than last year when it was on once or twice a week! gggrrrrrr. And Polly & Waz...what the F*#K was that room in the first week? My blind dog could decorate better than that!...........

  3. Pimp My Bricks - Thank you for such a thoughtful comment. I agree that the format is headache-inducing and the content (as well as design ability) has become so poor that there isn't really much point in watching the show anymore. I've lost interest this year anyway.

Sal - I loved the Block last year but this year I just feel like I'm wasting my time watching these design-retards fluffing around. And 4 times a week is just ridiculous. I fo have a life. As for Polly & Waz: My non-existent blind dog could have decorated any of their rooms better than they did. Tania and Rod frustrate the life out of me every week as they butcher beautiful historical features to replace them with brown shag and soul-less gas heaters... I think I'll just go back to reading Architectural Digest instead!
