The Good, The Bad and The Ugly: Lonny Holiday Issue

It's my favorite time of the month (every couple of months anyway): Lonny time! A few interiors this month had me floored. A couple others had me scratching my head. All in all though, another excellent issue from the Lonny team! Shall we have a look?

The Good:
1. This house all decked out for the holidays had me drooling. Every piece of furniture is tasteful and timeless. The Christmas tree reminded of our family tree: simple and elegant; with touches of white, red and gold. Perfect.

2. I really enjoyed the dining room below and I think it mostly has to do with that lightly textured wallcovering.

3. This hallway by Jamie Herzlinger is so beautiful and simple. The sconces and the box stools were my favorite pieces in the space.

4. This room may be on the quirky side, but somehow it works. I don't love the sofa, but I can tolerate it in this beautiful space.

The Bad:
I don't know about you, but I am sick to death of sunburst mirrors...

The Ugly:
1. This sofa and matching rug had me scratching my head. I would have expected this room in an episode of Better Homes and Gardens as a "home cinema transformation", not in Lonny purveyor of all things classic and beautiful. The fact that Celerie Kemble who I normally love designed this room makes me even more puzzled... Nice sconces though!

2. This bedroom makes me feel like I've just landed on a porn set. I must have to do with the zebra flooring and mirrored furniture, the strong lighting and lack of windows. Not the vibe I would want in my bedroom but hey, to each their own.

  1. Totally with you on that Christmas-y decorated room! Thought it looked festive (although a bit simple). Did you feel like this whole issue was a little...off? I was discussing with Tobe and some other girls online, but I noticed the white space and layouts in the issue were weird, and also, that in many cases the type choices and sizing interfered with the photographs. I agree on sunburst mirrors too. The problem is, they're not so bad, it's just that everyone and their mom has one now and everyone and their mom photographs them.

As for that last bedroom, it's just a weird mix of prim and proper and wild child. I don't know that it really works!

  2. Love your round up of the magazine. Makes me laugh each and every time, not only laugh but also agree most of the time.

  3. Victoria: I must admit I didn't notice the layout issues the first time around but I just went back and it didn't take me long! p.28 is shocking.
And you're right about the sunburst mirrors. Only I don't think I would see nearly as many if I was flicking through Elle Decor or another print magazine. I feel like sometimes online mags are a bit complacent when it comes to featuring new and cutting edge stuff...

Jimmy: Thanks :) I do enjoy writing them.

  4. I had to laugh because I so agree with you! That living room was ghastly! Some of those online mags are tiring me. Feel like they are trying too hard to be the "cool" kid on the blog only to fail miserably.

  5. I agree with you, the first home you showed was also my favorite of the issue. And the "home cinema transformation" as you called it, definitely stopped me in my tracks.. in a that's a little strange sort of way. I did think it was interesting that the side tables really disappeared, but I don't think it was redeeming enough to go for that look. Ah well.

  6. I completely agree about sunburst mirrors. I never really loved them, so their continued popularity has me a bit puzzled. I think there are certain interesting variations of them that are nice but in general I am also bored to tears.

  7. Barbara: Totally agree! To me, Lonny was the one that set the mark but this issue was a little disappointing.

Jenna: You made me laugh. sometimes experiments are interesting, but still best left in the lab!

Christina: I know! I thought I was the only weirdo who didn't share the love but I'm glad to know I'm not alone! Ok, I had a moment of lust when I first discovered Jonathan Adler and startburst mirrors were a bit of a novelty but that was like 8 years ago! Thought we would be over it by now...
