Trending: Damien Hirst Spot Paintings

I recently featured this room, which got me thinking about Damien Hirst's spot paintings in decor. I'm not sure this really qualifies as "trending" as these paintings have been around since the 1980's. That being said, these famous spot paintings have popped up quite frequently as of late.

I discovered not too long ago that Hirst actually only painted about five spot paintings, while his assistants painted around 300. Chances are most of these paintings we're not actually painted by Hirst himself.

The grey spots are by far the most popular of the decor world and I must say I really love the effect they have in a room, no matter the color scheme. They somehow really stand out and anchor the space without being overpowering.

The coloured spots are nice too, but are probably harder to work into a space. But regardless of whether they look better in grey or in color, I would have to say I prefer them framed.

What are your thoughts on the Damien Hirst paintings? Love them, hate them? Would you attempt to get the look by trying a DIY version or do you think it's disrespectful to the artist to reproduce their art?

I love Damien Hirst's art, though most people don't get it.... He's such a smart guy! I think that the spot paintings look better in men's spaces, they always seemed a bit masculine to me. I love the butterfly art pieces but they freak me out because they are real, actual butterflies....

  2. God I really hope people have gotten over the whole "matching" art to their living spaces. In fact, I've always thought contemporary art is most compelling when it is placed in an environment where it seems a tad out of place. I've always loved his Spot paintings, and recently saw on Amazon that there is a big coffee table book coming out in a few weeks completely devoted to them. Unfortunately it's going to run you a couple hundred dollars, but I'm sure it's beautiful. Love your blog.

  3. Thanks for your comment Robert! Wow 200$ for a book on spot paintings... I'm actually almost tempted :) And couldn't agree more with you. Contemporary art in a traditional environment is pretty much as good as it gets!
